Juliette is out rollerblading in her neighborhood and suffers a fall – breaking her arm. She visits her primary care provider and discovers she needs surgery. This forces her to navigate the complex workflows of referrals and prior authorizations to get the care that she needs.
She wants to be seen by her provider of choice and expects her healthcare network to support that need. Luckily, her providers have enabled cutting-edge technology to quickly transform her documents from faxes to structured data.
This structured data is sent with the original document and is used to index and sort these unstructured documents right into her chart. She experiences no delays and is seen quickly by a specialist. The surgery center has the freedom to work flexibly with their referral partner’s technology while also providing structured data to their payer, expanding their network to better serve their community. When the surgery center can easily consume a structured document sent from a Direct Secure Messaging instead of using legacy fax technology, the structure of the document stops being a barrier, and communication flows freely to work with better continuity of care. Communication between these community partners — urgent care centers, her PCP, the Surgery Center, and her insurance — are all handled efficiently, ensuring Juliette's providers are focused on her immediate care, rather than time-consuming administrative tasks.

How can faxes contain useful information? Unstructured documents plague the healthcare industry, as it resists automation and bogs down workflows. With the implementation of 21st Century Cures Act, more and more information will need to be interoperable outside of organizations and much of it is not indexed but only scanned or worse on paper. In this session, we will discuss how OCR and Natural Language Processing can close this digital divide in Healthcare.
How faxes can contain useful information?
How does interoperability fit into the 21st Century Cures Act and how has it impacted healthcare delivery and payer organizations?
Where can Health IT support the challenge of healthcare equity and Social Determinants of Health?
How can Health IT help healthcare organizations prepare and manage differently since the COVID-19 pandemic?
How utilizing OCR, NLP, CCDAs, standard-based integrations can help close the digital divide in healthcare.
The challenges healthcare has faced in structuring and sharing its data.
